Same same but different

I remember my mother-in-law saying to me once, the one thing that surprised her most about motherhood was the individual personalities of all her kids. They all four were so different and it was something they were born with, nothing to do with how she raised them.

At the time I think I probably just rolled my eyes and thought 'Of course, we're all different people'.

Now, that I see my two girls together, I realise what she meant. My girls are incredibly close and have many similarities, but there are parts of their personalities that are completely different. Such as, the way they react to certain things or situations. Their outlooks and how they cope. I'm constantly amazed and surprised by them. Sure certain things are due to their different ages and developmental stages, but there are some core parts of their personalities that are unique to them alone.

Lil-lil is creative, imaginative and thoughtful, she's impatient with life but can sit back and watch the world with enthusiasm. She worries about people and is very perceptive. Goosey is methodical and clever. She fearless and wants to dive into life head first, but she also has the patience of a saint. She can also dance like it's no-one's business.

I've now realised is it's the secret to enjoying parenthood – discovering their little personalities as they discover them for themselves. Seeing them blossom into people, watching how they find their niche in the world. What they enjoy, how they do tackle things, what lights up their eyes. Best of all, it's just the beginning.

  1. Lovely post!

My 8yo & 3yo are similar in many ways, but also quite different. The 6yo is different again.

The 8yo is intense, dramatic, but has a great sense of humour. He's also artistic.

The 6yo is quieter and mentally tough. He's thoughtful though and sensitive to others. We call him "the little engineer" because he likes to work out how things work and construct.

The 3yo is FULL ON! He's a bundle of energy and physically tough. More sporty than the other two, but also likes to draw and paint.

The 8yo & 3yo in their baby photos look almost exactly the same. Not as much now, but certainly the 6yo looks different to both.

I love all their different traits and personalities. And, you know, my sister and I are quite different: I'm more outgoing, she's more reserved. I'm open to new things, she's more conservative in her views. But there are many other things we have the same opinion on.

    It makes a family interesting.

  2. Corrine I was JUST talking about this exact thing today! It's so true .... I'm amazed at the differences with my guys. And it's traits all of their own, nothing to do with me. (Their cranky mummy, ha!)

  3. That is my children to a tee. They are completely different, yet at the same time there are some similarities that keep them like brothers.
    Idk.
It makes no sense to most unless they just "get it" but i too have often waffled on about how alike yet how different my boys are.
And it's funny how it has nothing to do with parenting!

  4. Beautifully written. Parenting children is like Christmas until you unwrap that top layer you don't know what wonders are inside. My 4 are all totally different but enchanting in their uniqueness.
