The times they are a changin'

Firstly, I must apologise. I don't feel like my head has been with it this week and my posts have shown that. Besides having a great, big whopping headache and a twitchy eye, I have had a bit on my mind.

It looks like I may not be a stay-at-home mum any longer, I have received an offer to work two days a week. A permanent gig, just a couple of suburbs away with a small friendly team. I couldn't refuse. Though, of course, the mummy guilt kicks in and I wonder if the girls will be OK (will I be OK?).

Of course, I'll still be at home three days a week with them and it's not like they are little babies (though they're still my little babies). Still, I worry. Worry about how it will affect everyone.

Though I am a tad excited to be out in the working world again and hope that it'll make me a more interesting person. For myself, for Skip and for the girls.

All in all, it feels a little like the end of an era.

  1. Congratulation Corinne!
Embrace the exciting and push away the fears. In our house we say that these irrational ramblings that try to hijack our good efforts come from the 'Gobbler of Good Thoughts'. I know this sounds a little 'out there' but it helps to put things into perspective.
There are SO many wonderful elements to this new gig, I look forward to reading about what happens next.

  2. How exciting and heart tearing at the same time. What a wonderful opportunity. Give it a go and remember you can always change your mind later on if you want to! hope the twitching eye goes - how horrible. Love your blog. Naomi.

  3. Wow, big news and you're right, it IS the end of an era. But the beginning of a fab new one too. I think 2 or 3 days a week working is absolutely perfect (I work 4). I'm not sure what childcare arrangements you'll be making, but my little ones have been in daycare 2 days a week since they were around 1. They absolutely love it. I think all children past 18 months or so really love being with other children in this way. They thrive on the routine and there is always something fun happening. You will be amazed.

  5. The kids are always okay when Mummy goes back to work....it's mummy who has withdrawal. I have to go back to work this month and I'm dreading it. I will miss them so much.

  9. I've gone from a SAHM to a part time working mum, back to a SAHM and now I'm looking down the barrel of starting a full time job. To be brutally honest, I think unless they are little babies, kids are happiest when Mum works part time. They get to spend a bit of time with other family or at kindy, which helps diversify their perspective of the world, Mum gets a bit of grown-p time, and is therefore happier and more engaged when she is at home. This is just my experience of course, but I think you'll be fine.

  10. Congratulations! It took me a little time to adjust to working part-time but it's not a decision that I regret. P loves spending time with other people, be it the grandparents or at child care. And I know I enjoy his company even more so after I finish work.

  11. Congratulations. I did a major study of working moms when I was in college. The biggest factor that determines how the kids handle it is how the mom feels about it. If the mom wanted to be working but was home, the kids had "issues", and vice versa. So, enjoy it and they will too.
