Looking for answers

My three-year-old is at the stage of asking questions – lots of them, incessantly. I know this stage drives a lot of parents crazy and I can understand why, but I actually like it. I love how their little minds are trying to process the big world. I love how their questions reveal their perspective. I love the naivity, the purity, the curiosity.

Skip would probably say it's because I'm quite a curious person myself. He's always laughing at me as I can't let things rest until I find out how they work. I need to know what, why, where, who and how. I have to admit that I love the fact that my iPhone lets me Google things on the go.

Anyway, back to Lil-lil's questions, there have been some that I've loved explaining the answers in great details. Others I've wondered about where they've come from in her little brain. A few that have left me scratching my head. Some of the corkers that have come out in recent days include: Why do tears come out of your eyes when you're sad? Where does water come from? And my current fave: What sound do zebras make?

If anyone knows the answer to that last question, please let me know! Even Google doesn't have an answer that will satisfy a three-year-old.

  1. Oh wow, great question. I'm curious about the answer. Kids say the darndest things don't they? My three year-old grandson is the same. Gotta love 'em.

  2. Can't wait for Patrick to ask questions! I love hearing kids questions and watching them try and work things out.

That last question has me stumped too! One of Patrick's picture books has a photo of a zebra but the only noise I think to make for it is a horse's neigh. I imagine they'd sound similar?

  3. Are you KIDDING?! I swear to you, Daisy asked me this question 2 days ago (I even tweeted about it). Rob googled it as we though horse but it is actually the cross between a cow and sheep! Who knew? THAT IS FREAKING ME OUT!

  4. Ha! Beth, we are having parallel zebra/pork lives!
Lil won't take the the cow/sheep thing as an answer she wants a unique, distant sound like baa or moo. Maybe maa?

  5. I wandered past a few herds of Zebras when we were in Africa and I never heard one make a sound - are they the mutes of the animal world??
I will hit Shelt up for an answer on this - he does nothing but watch animal docs, he has to know. Just thinking, I've even seen them being chased and still no sound - telepathic communication?!?

  6. ooh I just typed in Zebra sounds into Youtube - sad I know, but like you I hate not knowing the answers to things.
Well weirdly Zebras make a low mooing sound like a cow and a high pitched barking sound like a hyena - weirdos.

  7. I think zebras make almost a horse/donkey noise. Don't quote me on that though!

    Hello, over from AMB :-)

  8. Yep - donkey-ish sound and quite loud too! I think it is a bit like a donkey crossed with a horse....although when I think about it I cant really think of what the difference is right now. Just looked up the relationship - and horses, donkeys and zebras are all a part of the equidae (horse) family...so surely they all sound a bit well....equine

  10. Hmmm, OK so does that make it an eeneeeeeimoo?
Lil-lil wants a term like 'quack', 'moo', 'neigh' or 'woof'.
OK all of my smarty pants readers, what sound does a giraffe make?

Here's Lil-lil's latest mind boggler: 'Mummy, who blows all the wind?'

  11. Looks like you got your answers. I was stymied on that one. I love this stage too, though I've learned I have to say "I don't know" quite a lot!
